On this Memorial Day I would like to mention and remember Cpt. George A. Wood, an officer of the United States army, a scholar, a brother, a son, a father and my husband. George was in Baqubah, Iraq when he was KIA by a roadside bomb while out on patrol. George began his career as an armored officer in Germany where he also earned his IEB (Infantry Expert Badge), not something you see a tanker accomplish but he was not your average Joe. He was part of the opposition force in Hoenfels, Germany where other units came to train before deployments. It was in Germany that George discovered a Roman fort via areal photography after begging helicopter pilots to let him ride along on their training missions to take his own pictures of land where he believed the Romans traveled. His discovery led to him finding roman pottery in the farmer’s fields during the winter months. He went on to be published for his finds and his pottery is in a museum in Munich, Germany. After our time in Germany we went on to live at Ft. Knox, Ft. Leavenworth and finally Ft. Hood, Texas. It was while we were in Ft. Hood that he discovered another Roman Fort, this time using satellite technology and this discovery was in Syria. He worked as quickly as he could to get his work published once again before being deployed to Iraq as a part of the second wave in Desert Storm. He deployed with the ¼ Armored Division and while deployed took command of the 1-67 Battalion. Being a commander of a battalion was a job he loved and looked forward to. With no doubt I know George’s story was cut way too short as I know he had so much more he wanted to accomplish. But the biggest tragedy was his daughter not getting the opportunity to grow up with the best dad that there was. So on this day let's remember George, Ria’s dad, my husband, and all the men and women who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. It is because of the bravery of so many men and women that we live in a free country and it is a gift that we must always remember and appreciate as it is not a given that we will live free tomorrow. ~Lisa Morrissey, LMT Happy Memorial Day to you all from Back to Basics. “All gave some, and some gave all.” National and Local Events: May 26th - 28th -Toledo Memorial Park Flag placing Learn More May 31st: -A national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 p.m. local time -Memorial Day Parade Sylvania, OH Learn More -Memorial Day Mass at 1 PM, 5725 Hill Ave. Toledo, OH -Annual Memorial Day Tribute Ottawa Hills Memorial Park Learn More-Memorial Day Mass - Mausoluem at 1 PM, 2224 Dorr St, Toledo, OH "If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again"~Karen White
